Des'ree Barnes

BMX and Weightlifting Champion

After picking up her brother’s bike at the age of three, Des’ree quickly taught herself to ride unaided around her family’s backyard. Fast-forward a few years and she’s been training, racing, winning, and making her own story for the history books.

In 2009, the UCI BMX World Championships were held in Des’ree’s hometown. With her friends and family cheering her on, the talented rider— who was just six years old at the time— won her first Challenge Class World Title.

A year later, Des’ree and her family moved from Adelaide to Redland Bay in Queensland. The huge shift was a blessing in disguise for the young and upcoming rider, given she was just 20 minutes away from the World Class BMX Supercross facility at Sleeman Sport Complex. Not only has she trained there ever since, but Des’ree now works with a strength and conditioning coach who teaches her all the movements and skills required to make her a strong competitor and a serious threat.

Although she’s learnt how to win in her short yet successful BMX career, Des’ree also knows what it’s like to be beaten. Like any competitive athlete who has their eye on the prize, she sees defeat as a motivator to train harder, be better, and excel at her craft.

There is a fire that burns deep within the rising star that cannot be doused. And her results, motivation and goals are a testament to this.

Away from the BMX track, Des’ree has other impressive achievements under her belt. In 2017, 2018 and 2019, she represented Australia for Olympic weightlifting at the Oceania Championships and took home three silver medals. She also started track cycling and won the elite team sprint national title at the end of 2020.

What’s next? Des’ree’s future goals include: 1. Competing at the BMX world championships first-year elite 2. Qualifying for Commonwealth Games weightlifting 3. Competing at the Paris 2024 Olympics in BMX/ track cycling 4. Competing at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Olympic weightlifting
